What To Expect

Bo-kaap
Our first stop will be in the famous bright & colorful Bo-Kaap. Known formerly as the Malay quarter. The inhabitants of Bo-Kaap came to the Cape in the 17th century as slaves from Malaysia and Indonesia. And till this day their descendants thrive in this community. Bo-Kaap is a national heritage site. It is the only mixed-race neighborhood that was exempt from the forced removals by the Apartheid government. While a few meters down the road District Six residents were banished to the Cape Flats

District Six was a multi working-class area just off the center of Cape Town, to the south of the Castle. Today it is an almost vacant lot, shown on maps as the suburb of Zonnebloem. Before being torn apart by the apartheid regime during the sixties and seventies, District Six, was an impoverished but lively community of 55 000,people of color. This inner-city area harbored a rich cultural life in its narrow alleys and crowded tenements. After its demise, the district became mythologized, as a rich place of the South African imagination, inspiring novels, poems, jazz and the blockbuster musical, by David Kramer and Taliep Petersen, District Six. The latter being an ex resident. It was named the sixth district of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants. District Six was a center with close links to the city and the port. Here you shall learn more about the people of District 6 before we head to Langa township
