Overview

The Helderberg Wine Region falls under Stellenbosch South – bordered by the Hottentots and Helderberg Mountains is a unique area with its mountains, forests, riverines, and fynbos with 70% of the Cape`s 8,600 fynbos species to be found here including some of the oldest and finest wine estates in the Cape Winelands. Vergelegen was established in 1685 by the Dutch East India Company and granted to the then governor of the Cape Willem van der Stel Abounded by beautiful trails and hikes in the surrounding reserves such as Idiom, Waterkloof, Morgenster and Lourensford Wine Estates.

What To Expect

Idiom Wine Estate - Built on the slopes of a mountain in the Helderberg Valley with beautiful views of the entire Heidelberg Basin and False Bay this new wine estate makes proper Italian wines using Italian viticulture's grown in S. African soil by an Italian named Roberto Bottega, they produce a huge range of Italian wines totally unique in S. Africa such as Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Cabinet Sauvignon-Merlot-Petit Verdot, Cape Blend, Shiraz- Mourvedre`-Viognier, Viognier, Rosso, Cabernet Franc, Barbera, Mourvedre` and Sangiovese amongst others, they have a deli and fabulous restaurant serving upper class bistro type meals. Wine maker Reino Thiart - wines produced are 85% red and 15% white

Waterkloof Wine Estate - Built high on top of the Schapenberg in the Helderberg Valley with its breathtakingly beautiful not only views but architecture and design. Known for their wonderful range of wines which include their Waterkloof range Sauvignon Blanc, Circle of life range reds and whites, Cinsault,, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cape Coral Mourvedre, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonay`s - Their restaurant has been rated in the top 10 in Africa for the past 2 years and is predominantly fine dining - owned by Paul Boutinot - Cellar master/Wine maker Nadia Barnard - Viticulturist Christian Loots - wines produced are 50% red, 45% white and 5% rose`.
