Overview

Founded in 1679 by the then govender of the Cape Colony Simon Van Der Stel on the banks of The Eerste Rivier. During 1690 French Huguenot viticultural refugees settled in Stellenbosch and immediately planted grapes in the fertile valleys around Stellenbosch making it the centre of the South African Wine Industry. Stellenbosch has the largest number of wine estate with 173 in the western cape and created what is known as the Stellenbosch wine route. Establish in 1971 by Frans Malan from Simonsig , Spatz , Sperling , from Delheim and Neil Joubert from Spier. Stellenbosch has arguably the best wine estates in the country if not certainly the largest variety. Stellenbosch is also a leading university town with roughly 29,000 students per annum.

Beyerskloof wine estate - Known as the home of Pinotage wines. Owned by industry legend Beyers Truter and Ian Morgan & Barnie van Staden, known for their Pinotage ( 230,000 cases made annually) Wine maker - Anri Truter and Buddy hendriks - Cellar master - Beyers Truter - Viticulturist - Johann Pienaar - wines - 90% red,2% white & 2% rose` - also known for their cinsaut, cabernet, merlot, pinot, and shiraz. - Restaurant Red leaf.

Simonsig Wine Estate for lunch and second wine tasting - Purchased in 1964 by Frans Malan, farther of current owners Francois and Johan Malan. First wines bottled in 1968 and in 1978 first Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel was produced using the Methode` Cap Classique method. Frans Malan was also one of the 3 original founders of the Stellenbosch wine route. - Cellarmaster/Winemaker - Johan Malan, Debbie Thompson, Hannes Meyer & Charl Schoeman. Annual production 340,00 cases - Wines 31% red, 41% white, 2% Rose` & 26% MCC, known for their Chardonnay and Pinotage - Restaurant - Curvèe.

Delheim Wine Estate for lunch. Delheim Wine Estate - Home to the Sperling family for over 60 years, Spatz Sperling, who is in his eighties was one of the 3 original pioneers of the wine routes/ tours as we know them today. His children Victor and Nora are now running the wine and tourism business today - Winemaker Reg Holder - Annual wine production 60,000 cases - wines 60% red, 20% white, 20% rose` - known for Delheim Vera Cruz Estate Shiraz. Restaurant- Delheim Garden Restaurant.

Muratie Wine Estate - Established initially 333 years ago and currently owned by the Melck family it is a art - and wine - lovers destination of sorts where contemporary art is the order of the day and the wine tasting building/room constructed of gnarled oaks and cobwebbed tasting room is some what rustic. - Wine maker - Hattingh de Villiers - Viticulturist - Conrad Schutte. Known for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot , P Verdot, Pinot, Shiraz, Chardonay, Chenin Blanc, Haneport, Port and Verdelho - Produces 300t/40,000 cases own label 60% red, 18% white, 2% Rose` and 20% other. Kanonkop Wine Estate
Kanonkop Wine Estate - Kanonkop Wine Estate derived its name from a kopje from which a cannon was fired in the 17th century to alert farmers in outlying areas that a sailing ship had entered Table Bay. Current owners and 4th generation family - brothers Johann and Paul Krige. - Winemaker Abrie Beeslaar/Alet de Wet - Viticulturists Koos du Toit & Rayno Maree. 120ha produces 2,200t/350,000 cases own label- 98% red & 2% Rose` - Pinotage accounts for 50% of all plantings, Cabernet Sauvignon 35% and the balance made up by Merlot & Cabernet.
